Brighton has everything a filmmaker could need; from the seafront to the lanes, the graffiti-covered backstreets to the array of parks and roadways. The city provides all the options for any genre of television, video or film production.

Brighton and Hove has a long history within the film and television industry with a number of productions choosing to use the area as a location. Some of cinema’s most iconic scenes were filmed right here. We’ve listed our favourites along with their locations.

Brighton Rock (1947)

Soundstage to look like the pier (shots of the waves underneath).

Originally a gangster film noir made in 1947, Brighton Rock became known for using real locations in Brighton and surrounding areas due to the book it was based off. There are many scenes set on the pier and the seafront including the film’s dramatic climax. As well as this, a tense chase scene sees protagonist Pinkie evade capture from the station all the way down to Pavillion Gardens.

A contemporary review in the Daily Mirror accused the film of “false, nasty, cheap sensationalism” (1). However most critics since, have warmed to the realism of the setting, noting how the homeliness of the tea shops and the charming seafront juxtaposes the gritty menace of the gangsters’ activities.

Brighton station

Brighton Rock was remade in 2010 and directed by Rowan Joffé. More in keeping with the book’s story, this version was also filmed in Brighton and surrounding areas such as Beachy Head where the film came to its evocative close.

Beachy Head

Madeira Drive

Oh! What a Lovely War (1969)

Directed by Richard Attenborough, this satirical look at the First World War really milks Brighton for locations using many of the city’s iconic backdrops. It was originally a stage play and follows the story of three boys of the same family who were working as soldiers. The film cements Richard Attenborough’s love of Brighton having being a young star actor in Brighton Rock.

Quadrophenia (1979)

Brighton seafront

Probably the most famous Brighton film is Quadrophenia which is actually set predominately in London but with the most iconic scenes taking place during an excursion to Brighton. Inspired by true events, masses of mods and rockers descended onto Brighton beach from London resulting in a mass fight that shocked the nation in 1964. Locations used during filming include East Street, Brighton Beach, Brighton Sea Life Centre, and Madeira Drive. The narrow and easily overlooked Quadrophenia Alley off East Street, was the famous setting for an escape from the police.

East Street

The End of the Affair (1999)

The End of the Affair is a romantic film drama starring Ralph Fiennes and Julianne Moore based on a novel of the same name. Predominantly set in London, the characters spend a weekend in Brighton and inevitably also pay a visit to the Palace Pier as well as the Royal Pavilion.

Brighton promenade

20,000 Days on Earth

Madeira Drive

This drama-documentary portrays a fictionalised 24 hours in the life of the artist Nick Cave on his 20,000th day on earth. It was filmed in Brighton because the musician has resided here since the early 2000’s. In memorable scenes, famous faces from his past such as Ray Winstone and Kylie Minogue revisit Cave in daydream-like scenes as he sits behind the wheel driving through his adopted hometown.

My Policeman

My Policeman is an upcoming romantic drama being made by Amazon Studios and was shot mostly in Brighton and the surrounding areas in 2021. The film is set in both the 1950’s and the 1990’s which again highlights the versatility of Brighton as a place to set your production. Based on a book, the film’s production caused a stir in the city as it stars Harry Styles and Emma Corrin with many residents cast to play extras. My Policeman was released in October 2022 and features Brighton locations such as Brunswick and Sussex Squares, the seafront and the Royal Pavilion.

Music and TV productions

Brighton has been home to not only film productions but also television and music videos. Big artists such as Laura Marling have chosen the city to accompany their music. Not many people are aware that The Beach Boys filmed a promotional video playing on the bandstand between the piers. Also, the hugely popular series of books by Peter James, which are largely set in Brighton, have been adapted into TV dramas and have being shot throughout the city from 2021.

The unique architecture and atmosphere of Brighton and Hove allow for great creativity and opportunity when it comes to filmmaking. One can regularly stumble across film crews, large and small, on location across the area. There is so much diversity to the city’s iconic landscapes and backdrops, they can be utilised time and time again for a wide range of filming; from small scale video projects to commercials, documentary, feature film or light entertainment television . Whether it’s contemporary production, a period drama or a futuristic sci-fi setting. Brighton has the filming locations covered.

Need funding for your project? A viable option is still crowdfunding. Crowdfunding video production needs to be super-personal, slick and succinct.

Crowdfunding has been raising funds for a wide range of projects, from creative endeavors to entrepreneurial ventures since popular sites like Kickstarter began in 2009. A Crowdfunding video is similar to a promotional video in it’s aims; to clearly explain what you’re selling and to gain financial help from those who believe in it’s eventual success. They also often promise some kind of reward for those who help the campaign.

Experts predict that by 2023, there will be 12,063,870 crowdfunding campaigns worldwide. (1) Clearly, not all campaigns can be as successful as Exploding Kittens, Fidget Cubes or an innovative new solar panel roadways, but we have gathered our best tips for making a great crowdfunding video which can boost your campaign and generate cash.

1. Make the video personal

Introduce yourself and the team behind the idea in the first few seconds of the production – especially if you’re the company founder. Viewers want to know who’s behind a project in order to get a sense of trust. A video talking head explaining how the idea came about and why you’re so passionate about making it a reality can capture viewers’ attention as well as their hearts. Allowing your audience to glimpse behind the scenes makes it feel personal and makes them much more encouraged to want to help the business.

2. Video storytelling structure

There’s a story behind every project, each with a unique starting point. If you study most crowdfunding videos that eventually reach their goals, you’ll find that they have a structure that’s divided into different sections. This helps clarify the message, as well as a form of story running through the whole video. The nature of storytelling is very convenient for people – it’s how audiences digest information better. Marketers are taking a different approach and selling less directly than they used to. Now, video stories help us make the product more attractive to the audience.

3. Help from a video production company

First impressions count. A campaign is much harder to get behind when the crowdfunding is poorly executed. A successful crowdfunding video is engaging and high-quality. Even an astounding idea which is badly marketed could eventually find its audience, but a well thought out crowdfunded video campaign gives a serious advantage. Hiring a professional video production company to produce your crowdfunding video will massively increase your chances of raising the desired capital to kickstart the business. It matters in getting your message across effectively so you can focus on alternative strategies for the business.

4. Focus on the product or service

Crowdfunding videos are designed to attract, engage and inspire people to get involved with your campaign. Talking head interviews convey trust in the owners and showcasing your product of service, focussing on the benefits, should be an integral part of your video production.

5. Make the video unique

Elaborate publicity stunts or unusual ads might draw bigger audiences initially, but trying to imitate other successful crowdfunding videos won’t guarantee attracting viewers that will want to help your idea financially. Backers want to invest in likeable, trustworthy personalities with innovative ideas. With a creative video campaign, unique to your product, you are in the best place to gain support.

6. Inspire People

Calling people to action and persuading them to part with their money is tricky, you need to inspire. Your overriding message should repeated throughout the video, to leave viewers with an understanding of what you’re trying to achieve and why they should get involved. Stories about overcoming adversity always capture people’s hearts and attention. Be open and honest about your passion for the idea; this will inspire you video audience to help.

7. Highlight the rewards

Most crowdfunding campaigns offer rewards to those who support the project from the start. For example, the promise of the final product for free if the company achieves their goal. This is really attractive for audiences and is often a deciding factor if they get involved. Clearly explaining the rewards in the video production should be one of the main aspects of your crowdfunding campaign.

8. Be yourself

Ultimately, your audience are investing in you. As much as the video viewer might likes your product or service, if they don’t like you, you’re finished. You should practice in front of video camera before delivering the final messages to ensure you come across sincerely and in an upbeat, likeable manner.

With brands still recovering from the financial effects of Coronavirus and with an energy crisis fast approaching, you may wonder if budgeting for video marketing is the best use of funds.

Why video production marketing is so important:

85% of consumers want to see more video content from brands. (HubSpot)

Businesses who used video production marketing campaigns ended up growing revenue 49% faster than non-video users in 2019.

64% of consumers will make a purchase after watching branded videos on social platforms. (Tubular Insights)

84% of consumers surveyed were convinced to buy a product or service after watching a brand’s video. (Neil Patel)

Initially, investing funds into video marketing during downturns may sound like a bad idea. However, due to less people considering this and resisting investment in marketing, this is the opportunity to make your brand stand out. With fewer companies in the space and cuts to marketing being made, your films and video will stick in the minds of your potential customers and become their go-to when they’re ready to buy.

Companies can fail to consider the long term when adjusting their budget. However, when the role of marketing is in some ways to establish a relationship between brand and consumer requiring consistency, keeping your brand updated with video production content maintains a sense of reliability and a positive representation which will resonate with people.

Audience preference leans toward video content styles of marketing over reading, and good video marketing sticks in the mind of the viewer. A study by Forbes even finds that 80% of users can recall a video ad they’ve seen in the past 30 days (3). Whilst advertisements attract consumers in the first place, explainers, tutorials and testimonial videos are going to be a critical part of your marketing production efforts when the goal is to convert.

Using an experienced and savvy video production company

These reasons show that video content is highly important when forming your video marketing budget which more companies are becoming aware of. Enlisting the skills of a professional video production company will elevate your promotional film in an increasingly competitive medium for many reasons. The right filmmaking company will understand marketing trends and the best methods to produce the right creative content to promote your brand.

Through use of an experienced, savvy video production team, brands have access to options in terms of types of video content which you can use to align with your specific marketing strategy. Depending on what you promote, YouTube videos, Instagram posts, longform advertisements or even short TikTok’s all appeal to different customers and markets.

Access to a video production department’s resources and skills such as a slick combination or camera operating, video editing and photography is also a large advantage. Without help of professionals with the appropriate knowledge and equipment, you risk additional costs investing in trying to create the video content yourself. Remember, not channelling enough budget to a video marketing campaign can leave you with second rate results that could actually prove detrimental to your business.

As Cisco reported that video marketing is going to make up 82% of all consumer internet traffic by the end of 2022 (4) video can (and should) be incorporated into all marketing channels when possible. There’s a saying: “If sales are your problem today, marketing was your problem 12 months ago”, and as the world grows more video content rich, it’s already too late to start prioritising video marketing in your production budget.

The use or drones in video production, filmmaking and TV, has grown exponentially over the past decade. Nowadays, they can be remarkably cheap and with decent cameras to provide otherwise unachievable aerial images of high quality.

The earliest recorded use of an unmanned aerial vehicle for war-fighting occurred in July 1849, serving as a balloon carrier. They have evolved through years of war, up to today where people use a variation of them as toys. Filmmakers have seized the opportunity to harness the ease of use and flexibility that drone technology provides. Drones are also used for crop management, surveillance, search and rescue, monitoring and even firefighting.

Drones have been used in professional filmmaking, video production and photography ever since they could carry cameras.

A cameraman cannot easily fly above locations smoothly, limiting the possible angles and frames for the best camera shots.

“Drones have almost eliminated the need for helicopter shoots for filmmaking, owing to their flexibility and affordability. You cannot fly a helicopter through two buildings, but you can do that with a drone. There are so many instances when you require an aerial shot. In such cases, when we want a single uncut shot, somebody grabs the drone as it’s coming down, carries it through into the house, for instance, or follows the subject. That’s when drones get creative,” says Rashad Al Safar of SkyVision. (1)

When the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration finally approved the use of drones on American film shoots in 2014, large productions such as Skyfall and The Wolf of Wall Street had already utilised them. Exemptions to this were rarely approved and many filmmakers interested in shooting with drones had to do so overseas. The UK has its own set of rules when it comes to flying drones. For video production companies, you must be Civilian Aviation Authority (CAA) approved by which you will need to demonstrate a sufficient understanding of aviation theory and pass a practical flight assessment. You will also need to develop basic procedures for conducting the type of flights you want to do and set these out in an Operations Manual. Even after that, restrictions apply, prohibiting use of drones “over or within 150 metres of any congested area”, or “within 50 metres of any vessel, vehicle or structure which is not under the control of the SUA operator or the remote pilot of the aircraft”.

Before these rules were established, professional, independent and hobbyist filmmakers alike were running riot with drones leading to a wide variety of creativity and improved cinematic experiences given the opportunity to experiment with aerial shots and portray stories in fresh ways. DOP’s are becoming increasingly well versed with the wide range of drones on the market: from small and cheap too expensive and advanced. Depending on the size and nature of the production, a filmmaker can easily find a drone that suits their budget and needs. Worth pointing out that for just a 30 minute flight the previous alternative – a helicopter – would cost upwards of £25,000.

Essentially, anyone can fly a drone from a toddler upwards. When it comes to filmmaking it’s all about pushing the limits – being dangerous – to achieve the very best aerially cinematic experience. Having 8K cameras on board helps, but ultimately it’s about the nouse and mentality of the pilot.

A wide, bird’s eye view provides a “wow factor” and a well-crafted high tracking shot of your characters can alleviate your film to new heights. If you haven’t already, maybe now’s the time to look into using drones for your productions.

Video is a great tool to aid your building construction project and comes in various guises to suit internal or external audiences. With help of a professional production company, you can create a video or film for your every requirement.

Building and construction companies can benefit massively from utilising marketing and tutorial videos, adding transparency to the business and gaining trust in their services. 85% of construction companies use video production in some form; both in-house and as a chief form of marketing.

Health and safety videos

As building sites have gotten more complex, bustling and dangerous places with time pressures at a premium, health and safety videos are increasingly important. Gone are the days when your new induction group use a health and safety video as an excuse to nap for ten minutes, There trick now is to keep your audience engaged through drama, wow factor or touches of humour. If the H&S video can save just one serious accident, it’s done it’s job.

Tutorial or explainer videos

Tutorial videos can outline anything from on-site procedures for new employees to how to operate pieces of machinery correctly and safely. They can save masses of time by freeing up someone who would otherwise have to demonstrate the operation (and also perhaps pass on bad habits). Once a tutorial video is created it can be used time and time again for first time students or as a reminder to keep workers fresh. Explainer videos can highlight different processes using graphics to make them easy to follow and understand.

Time-lapse

Large building projects can take months or even years to complete. Special cameras can be placed on site to capture the process; recording just a snippet every day which can be laced together to show the process speeded up. They can also hone in on capturing smaller parts of the process, like building a wall which can double up as tutorial video. If set-up correctly, these videos are highly engaging and can be used both externally or internally to showcase construction progress.

Sustainability films

These days, with such huge focus on climate change and the environment, sustainability videos are massively important to highlight to clients, contractors and investors that your company are making strides to become zero waste or generally work in a ‘greener’ more resourceful manner. These films are crucial to securing long term building projects where environmental concerns are towards the top of the check lists.

Drone video production

Aerial photography can give an amazing alternative perspective to a construction site. Drone filming can be used intermittently as a progress indicator or more practically to assess complications or risk attached to various stages of the building process.

Video being sent over the internet live, in real time, without first being recorded and stored… in a nutshell, this is live-streaming. All you need to live stream is a video capturing device, an internet connection and a video platform. This makes it extremely accessible.

TV production broadcasts, video games, music gigs and social media video can all be live-streamed. YouTube is historically the most successful streaming platform with Facebook Live almost starting to surpass it. Marketers have found success on other popular apps like Twitter and Instagram. Twitter’s live streaming tool began with Meerkat before introducing their own version, in the guise or Periscope.

With many of these platforms, a notification will invite followers to share the experience with you and others, with live interaction. The popularity of this type of video medium is soaring by the day and taking the internet by storm. Some remain confused as to why it’s so popular; here we outline just some of its uses.

Video production moments

Many live streamers love the sense of being ‘in the moment’ and interacting closely with others, from friends and family to huge global audiences . There are endless opportunities during a live, unscripted video broadcast. A plethora of unplanned situations such as Q&A’s, discussions and the showcasing of talent could be included; this spontaneity keeps the medium of live streaming fresh and exciting.

Video streaming for business

Live streaming provides opportunity, not only spontaneous moments but more structured events which can aid the growth of businesses. Live events, conferences and video interviews are just some examples of professional events which could reach potential and existing customers. Of course, previously, if these events contained especially important information they would be recorded and uploaded later. However, live video streaming provides the opportunity for viewers to comment and ask questions which can be answered in real-time.

Real-time video connection

Brands should understand the importance of this kind of frequent interaction with their target audience. Feedback that occurs on live streaming facilitates an instant connection between business and customer which builds engagement and heightens trust. As well as this, some audiences love the sense of unpredictability, with up to 80% preferring to watch live videos than reading a blog. This is not to forego the power of planned professional video production content that resonates extremely well with audiences and should be an integral part of your brand’s marketing strategy.

Live streaming’s reach

There are many other key benefits of using live streaming in business. The wide reach of live streaming means, if your event is public, it could reach new global audiences who stumble across it whilst scrolling through their social media, especially if you stream across multiple platforms. Live broadcast also allows opportunities for brands to immediately deliver their best quality and most current video messages to existing and potential customers. For instance, if a new event or a product has launched, you can quickly and easily stream a live video to share details whether it be a scripted advert made by a professional video production company or a host explaining the product. Brands can also promote new products or services with live broadcasts and additionally provide links – to increase awareness and ultimately boost sales.

Businesses should include live video streaming in their marketing strategies as it’s highly engaging, efficient in developing brands and can assist in growing communities.

Scanning through the end credits of a film or TV show you’ll see hundreds of jobs that have been required to create them. Some of these roles can have pretty elusive titles leaving you wondering what the job actually entails. We’ve uncovered and explained some of the most asked-after roles in film, tv or video production.

Production designer

Production designers are responsible for the entire visual concept of a film and help the director achieve their aesthetic requirements for their vision. They will begin work at the very early stages of pre-production alongside the director or producer, collaborating with them in deciding the style or design of the film. Once this concept is determined, they’ll be responsible for appointing and managing the art department. Most of a production designer’s work will take place in the pre-production and principle photography stages. They provide producers with carefully calculated schedules that offer a variety of ways to make the film within the agreed budgets and timescale. The job requires many skills such as providing detailed drawings, estimating budgets and leading the entire art department to help create the atmosphere of the film and bring the story to life. They can have a say on the best location for the film scene and even incorporating camera movements.

Production designer is not an entry-level role as most work their way up through the art department. However, for larger budget productions, production designers have greet responsibility and can be handsomely paid.

Assistant director

The first assistant director is the director’s right hand. 1st ADs plan the filming schedule, working closely with the director, director of photography and other heads of department to ensure an efficient film shoot. In pre-production, they break down the script, analysing it for what will be required in terms of cast, locations, equipment and crew. They lead recce’s, assessing the suitability of filming location; they draft the shooting schedule and work out how long each scene will take to capture. During filming, the first ADs manage the set, which leaves the directors free to focus on the actors and framing the shots.

The Assistant Director must be the intermediary between the director and the crew, they are the ones that get things done, and most importantly, they are responsible to get the day’s schedule completed. In essence, they “manage” the entire film. Their average salary is around £55,000.

Grip

Grips ensure that the vision of the director and director of photography (DoP) is achievable. While directors think of the artistry of the shots, grips devise how they are physically going to move the cameras to bring the vision to life and ultimately make it happen.

A Grip is responsible for setting up, rigging, and lighting equipment on set.

Before production filming starts, grips break down the script and work out with the DoP what equipment will be needed to support the cameras for each scene. They will also go on recess to check out the location.

On shooting days, grips start early to set up the equipment. As soon as the camera starts to roll, they anticipate all the camera moves and deal with the unexpected or, directors changing their minds, last minute. Other Grips work with the camera crew and are responsible for things like building camera tracks for moving cameras, mounting various camera rigs onto cars or setting up for crane shots.

Another similarly-named role on a film set is the Gaffer. The distinction is that the Gaffer oversees anything electrical and the Key Grip oversees all non-electrical rigging. Both have Best Boy, explained later in this blog.

Gaffer

A Gaffer’s responsibilities on a film set vary according to the size of the project and budget. However they are chief lighting technician’s on set who generally head up the electrical department. The Gaffer will consider what type of equipment would be required to create the DoP’s desired ‘look’, and monitor the budget. They can earn great money depending on the scale of the tv show or film production.

Best boy

A best boy is the first assistant to either the grip crew or the lighting department (larger productions usually hire one for each). They fill a number of day-to-day operational roles on a film set. While the gaffer and key grips’ work closely with the director of photography (or cinematographer), the best boys take care of everything topside to ensure a seamless production.

Their many responsibilities include the hiring, scheduling, and management of crew; the renting, ordering, inventory, and returning of equipment; workplace safety and maintaining discipline within their department; completing time cards and other paperwork.

Foley artist

Put simply, a Foley Artist is someone who makes ‘Foley’. But what is Foley? In drama and film, Foley is used in post-production to create sounds of people movement. So footsteps, the rustling of clothes, fighting sound effects and other ‘close-up’ audio that most likely will not be captured by sound recordists during the video production. They may recreate sounds in ways you’d never expect, using objects completely different to what’s shown on screen.

Art director

The art director is in charge of budgeting and executing all of the production designer’s approved plans. They must hire the costume designers and hair and makeup staff, create the set dressing and props, and oversee all of this creation in close collaboration with the production designer. If the film requires a prop that does not exist, the art director must find someone who can manufacture a realistic version of it. They hire and supervise a staff of assistant art directors or set designers to complete set designs.

Line Producer

The line producer oversees all operations and logistics for a film, from the pre-production phase right through delivery of the completed work. A line producer’s role is often coupled with the title production manager or production supervisor, depending on the project. Line producers are at the heart of a production, hiring the crew, allocating budgets and making sure the filming is done safely, creatively and on time. The person in this role needs to be very switched-on and personable as all department heads report to the line producer – they act like human resources on set. Its a multi-skilled role that can be fairly lucrative.

Location assistant

Location assistant (or formerly, runner) is an entry-level role on set which assists wherever they are needed on productions. Their duties vary depending on which department or which production they are assigned. They may be involved in anything from office administration, assisting with answering phone, arranging transport or crowd control to public relations and clearing locations. However, the job of a location assistant is really to ensure everyone on set is happily fed and watered enabling them to get on with their individual jobs comfortably.

User-generated content (or UGC) is a great form of video marketing that is created and shared by the public based on their experiences. This sharing of content is predominantly focused on social media video production but can spread to more traditional entertainment platforms and more frequently, even TV news.

UGC marketing has many benefits, especially when used in conjunction with professionally generated film content and and aligned with a great strategy for video promotion.

Over 90% of consumers trust User Generated Content for making online purchases (1) as it is led by consumers not being paid to promote and share across accessible avenues. UGC is honest, open and reliable; aiding consumers to make choices uninfluenced by bias. Further, it’s an effective way to achieve unobtrusive advertising without wasting time or money.

1. Wide reaching

A good user-generated content campaign has the ability to easily find a large, worldwide audience. For example, Coca Cola’s far-reaching campaign of printing people’s names on bottles and encouraging them to find theirs and share a photo online. Alongside the use of professional video content and advertisements, it was a simple yet very effective method to involve a wide audience of consumers. Creating custom brand hashtags can encourage users to share their thoughts and opinions reaching across the globe. This exposure, though harder to achieve for small businesses, increases the chances of engagement and conversions about what you want to promote. Having a wide global reach is especially important when promoting travel and specific destinations. In fact, UGC is generally regarded as the most authentic and influential content by consumers and for the travel industry with its influence steadily growing. A 2017 report found that an average of 42% of consumers were influenced by user-generated content when planning travel. (2) Visiting a completely new place can be daunting; what else is best to influence our decisions more than photography, blogs, video reviews or film content direct from people like us who’ve been there before.

2. Diversity

Billions of people now have access to devices that make it quick and easy to share their experiences through video or photography. Whilst content created in-house with a professional video production team is focused on selling your brand in the best way possible that social media posts or blog reviews cannot achieve, it is limited by the number of minds at work. User-generated content opens the door to so many more creative content ideas that can produce relatable promotion right from the user’s perspective. Leveraging this kind of diversity offers the opportunity to cover different demographics, psychographics and even geographical locations with barely more output from your marketing resource

3. Audience Response

Unsurprisingly, surveys have found that 76% of consumers think most professional ads are “very exaggerated” or “somewhat exaggerated.” With respondents even claiming that they “refuse to make a decision” about a product based on its advertising without seeking customer reviews first (3). Whilst it’s practically impossible to avoid the influence of advertising as it infiltrates every form of media, the consensus is that a lot of people dislike traditional ads. Instead, social proof through customer reviews, testimonials and ‘real life’ photos is validation that your brand is authentic and trustworthy – highly encouraging further user engagement. An aesthetically pleasing photo of food or public spaces by someone you follow is likely to stay in your mind because of your personal connection to whoever is subsequently endorsing it.

It’s important not to overlook the power of professionally filmed ads and rely on social proof alone. Professional video content ensures your brand is presented in a higher-quality format with further control. The video production team can invest money, time and energy into paying attention to the message communicated to the audience and therefore convey exactly what you require. Using a combination of UGC and professional filming and photography can convey many influencing values in harmony.

Brand Advocates and Influencers

User-generated content is also excellent at generating empathy and envy. Alternative forms of non-traditional advertising have risen in popularity and harness this by blurring the boundaries between UGC and professionally created film and video content which compels people to buy and suppress their feelings of missing out. Influencers have taken over pretty much every social media platform with their brand deals, sponsored posts and #gifted ads. It seems that every other video you scroll through on Tiktok is a 15-second promotional video with links straight to the product. It could be viewed that when influencers claim opinions of the brand are their own, it’s a form of consumer-created content presented as a seemingly unbiased review despite them being paid to create it. By incorporating the feeling of authenticity in UGC with the professional aspects of influencers’ video content, who may work with professional photographers or camera operators, brands can get the best of both worlds in obtaining promotion in the best possible light whilst still maintaining trust.

However, many remain sceptical to Influencers with some claims that particularly those from the millennial generation are losing trust in this form of advertising. Backed by situations such as Khloe Kardashian’s “flat tummy tea” which was proven to not work and in fact be incredibly unhealthy for those who fell for it. This has shifted a focus to brand advocates – customers who believe in, show loyalty and speak extremely highly of a brand to other consumers. They aren’t exactly influencers as they are rarely paid but they succeed in a similar way by creating brand desirability and maintaining a long-standing positive reputation which is crucial in video advertising.

In a world so heavily involved with social media, user-generated content should be a priority intertwined with professionally created video content for brands. When used as part of a wider marketing approach, it can effectively humanise companies and strongly influence customers.

Success in this domain is primarily dependent on intrinsic planning and highly streamlined logistics. As travel possibilities slowly open up coming out of covid, here are the key pointers for how to prepare for a travel video production project:

1. Travel video research

Besides sourcing loads of books and online guides, extract as much information as viably possible from national and local tourist boards and I’d recommend finding a travel consultancy to provide video guidance.

2. Production boots on the ground

Finding a local production fixer could be tough in an emerging destination. But remember, a decent one could prove integral to the process from film development through production. Find a local video production company to work with or advise on this. Local crews obviously have important local knowledge.

3. Draft mood or storyboards

Establish your target market and then gear the script towards them. Think carefully about images and narrative. A killer VO video production script could really help to guide form the backbone of the films. As with any form of video production, scripting and storyboarding can offer a clear template to follow, for clients and crew alike. But be agile and ready to adapt the story if conditions and circumstances change once on filming location.

4. Think filming logistics

Logistics are everything when planning a travel film production. You will be working to tight deadlines and probably equally tight budgets – and these two factors are likely to clash when considering logistics. Throw-in having to having to keep the crew happy in order to maintain high-production values, and you’ll see why planning travel and accommodation meticulously for your video production is so important.

5. Choosing your film crew

Your crew should be as slim as possible, to minimise logistical and accommodation costs. Multi-skilled crews are best so if you have an amazing drone operator who can also take superb still images then all the better. The crew must also be hardened to tough environments, non too precious, content to rough it at times and be highly reliable. As well as obviously being talented.

So I was chatting to my girlfriend in bed this morning trying to figure out the subject of a new video production blog. She questioned why the need to write blogs at all? How does it actually benefit a business and is devising video blogs time well spent?

So here goes, the blog on why you need to blog:

1. Blogs drive traffic to your website

First of all, blogs are great for boosting SEO. A website with no blog sits with the same old content for months on end and it gets stagnate. Blogs inject new content that Google’s algorithm is extremely fond of. Put simply, if you maintain an active blog – especially video blog – you are much more likely to rise to the top of search engine results.

2. Boost organic visitors

Blogs are best for attracting people who search organically. You’ll attract more variety of visitors, which in turn can widen your market, especially if the video content is good. The audience will be interested in what you have to say, and the content will be a great way of forging a relationship.

3. Great source of video information

Blogs are great for providing a wealth of information to consumers. They can also be helpful in creating a sense of community in video production circles.

4. Vlogs establish authority

Vlogs are extremely beneficial in validating a company to its customers. They establish trust in the company’s ethos and knowhow and ultimately create relationships that can turn video viewers into paying consumers.

5. Reach to multiple platforms

Essentially, blogs are a form of online marketing. They offer free advise on a seemingly limitless amount of subjects, directly or non directly linked to your business. This information, in turn can be shared across numerous platforms, especially when using video production. Widening the net for potential customers.
